Wickedly Prime brand turned out to be wickedly good; actually much better than this homemade soup-snob family expected. This soup is real food, not just a salty chemical concoction called soup. It is a bit on the high side for sodium watchers (415 mg per 1 cup serving), but fairly low in calories and fat. Protein and fiber (6 g each) were on point. The soup is real food, made from real ingredients – corn, beans, peppers, quinoa, etc. The eyes get to feast as well as the taste buds, as the ingredients are readily identifiable and look really fresh. It is an earthy, savory black bean soup with just the right touch of spice and smokiness. The chipotle peppers are immediately identifiable to the taste buds and coordinates well with the bright flavor bursts of the vegetables. It was great all by itself, but I like fresh, so I topped it with sour cream and spring onions. With the addition of two simple toppings, it went from terrific to impressive. I am pleasantly surprised and impressed with the complexity of the taste, the abundance of vegetables and beans and the quality ingredients. I would serve this to guests. It comes in an easily storable box container with a long shelf life, so it’s going to be a pantry staple in our kitchen from now on. Highly recommend. Check it out!

After having had their chicken soup, my wife and I moved onto their Chipotle Black Bean. I have always been a fan of canned soups. My wife not so much. She really liked the chicken soup so I had high hopes for this one also. My wife and I both had one together. I heated both up in the microwave. To my surprise she really liked this one also. The first thing we noticed is that you can not tell it is a prepared soup. Normally all canned soup comes with that canned soup taste. This soup has none of that due to being made with high quality ingredients and being package in a paper-based container. It has corn, green chilies, bell peppers, onion and black beans, all of which has great texture. It is not all mushy like normal canned soups. It is a bit on the spicy side but that was fine. We tend to like spicy more than non-spicy foods. Amazon really hit a home run with this soup. It is something that earned a spot in our pantry. It is a bit more money than typical supermarket soups but it is very much worth it. It will fool even the most trained palates and pass for a homemade soup. The soup has a very good nutritional profile. Each box is two servings. Each serving has 150 calories, 3. 5 grams of fat, 0mg of cholesterol, 830mg of sodium, 27 grams of carbs and 6g of protein. Now don’t get me wrong – on its own, this is a good soup. There’s a lot going on in here, enough to satisfy on the merits. That doesn’t mean it can’t stand to have a little embellishment. More on that in a second. First the basics. Yes, it’s a southwestern-inspired soup. The basics are there, from the smoky-heat of the chipotle to the earthiness of the beans to the sweet of the corn. The broth is full and rich, expected given the bean base. It has a full mouthfeel with plenty of filling in it – this is not some thin canned condensed soup. It’s, well, about as real as you’re going to get from a pre-made, packaged, ready-to-heat soup. And since it’s pre-made, preparing it is as easy as falling off a log. The Tetra Pak means you don’t even need scissors. ..the top is perforated, so rip off the top, pour into a bowl, and microwave. Or into a saucepan and heat it. Whatever. Easy. Again though, this doesn’t mean it can’t stand for some doctoring. I added in chorizo because, well, I like meat in my soup. And while I liked the chipotle flavor, I thought it could use a little more emphasis, so I experimented with adding Tabasco Chipotle sauce (which went a little overboard, frankly) before I settled on stirring in some adobo. That did the trick for me. If you aren’t as weird as I am, I’m confident in saying that this soup right out of the box is going to satisfy. I really like it – not quite love in my case, so maybe I’m being a bit hard on it. Regardless, it’s a fine product and a good meal.
