Buy “TomTom VIA 1505M World Traveler Edition 5-Inch Portable Touchscreen Car GPS Navigation Device – Lifetime US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe Maps Cell Phones & Accessories” Online
I bought one of these from Amazon’s Warehouse Deals a week ago and can now answer a couple of questions that have popped up about this product. There has been a lot of back-and-forth about whether the free lifetime maps apply to both the North American and European maps or just to the North American. I was particularly concerned about this because I had the experience, with the TomTom XXL 540S World Traveler Edition, of being told by TomTom that "lifetime maps for all maps on the device" didn’t apply to the European map that came on that unit. Essentially, they just stiffed those of us who have that device. So, I was leery when I read the conflicting reports for the VIA 1505M World Traveler Edition but thought that it was worth taking the chance. When the unit arrived, I created a TomTom account on MyDrive Connect and connected the unit. I then got a message that there were map updates to download for both North America and Europe. That didn’t answer the question, because TomTom always gives you a "latest map" guarantee when you purchase one of their GPS units. However, when I then reviewed my account information and checked on "Maps," it specifically states that I have lifetime maps for both North America and Europe (shown as two separate "products"). The unit comes preloaded with both North American and European maps, but there isn’t enough storage space on it to install the updates. You have three choices. You can download the maps to your computer and then move them off of and onto the unit when you need them (using the North American map, for example, when driving in the US and switching it out for the European map when going overseas). You can load the North American map and a "zone" of the European map, depending on which countries you want or need at the time. Or (and this is by far the easiest), you can buy a microSD card, insert it into the microSD slot in the unit and leave it there. If you choose the microSD card option, make sure to get a card that is big enough to hold an entire map (or all of the maps), because one map won’t load with part of it on the card and part of it on the internal storage. I got a 16 gb class 10 card for $9 (on sale); that provides plenty of storage for all of the maps. I haven’t used the unit in the field yet, but my prior experience with TomTom has been very satisfactory (other than the experience with the European map on the XXL540S WTE). Check it out!

TomTom VIA 1505M World Traveler Edition 5-Inch Portable Touchscreen Car GPS Navigation Device – Lifetime US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe Maps Review
This is the third TomTom I’ve had. My last one was stolen out of my car in Raleigh, NC. I got a call about a year later from a police detective in DC. They had recovered my unit, but it was evidence in a stolen auto parts case because they used it to track the suspects’ travels as they sold or fenced the car parts. In other words, “We recovered your GPS, but don’t hold your breath waiting to get it back. ” I like the features and definitely needed the European maps, as I go there about every other year for a couple weeks. This unit is lightweight and works great. It takes a little while to update the maps (“free updates” actually means four updates/year), but I just let it run overnight to download the new ones. On my first TomTom, I didn’t like the mounting system, but I’ve come to like it a lot better. For one thing, the unit no longer pops off the mount so easily. The only reason I don’t give this unit five stars is because of TomTom’s absolutely absurd computer interface package, their website, and their policies/support. Remember that my last unit was stolen? Well, guess what? You apparently can’t add a second unit to an existing TomTom account. ..and you have to have an account to get the updates or any other reasonable support. What’s more, they told me that I can’t replace the unit that’s on my account with the new one. In order to add my newly-purchased, entirely legal GPS, I would have to prove that I bought it by sending them a copy of my Amazon receipt, including purchase price. Then, I would have to call them during business hours to have a rep remove my (stolen) unit and add the new one so I could simply use the TomTom management program, much less download any updates. I told them to get lost and just created a second account with an alternate e-mail. But along the way, it took a couple hours and multiple e-mails to figure out why nothing would work on my account and what i had to do to make it work. That’s just plain stupid. -Read Reviews-

I purchased this device for our travels to Great Britain and Ireland. I updated the maps before we left and it worked like a charm. Purchasing this device was much cheaper than renting one through the Car Rental Agency.
