Usually you buy the board book for 1 reason. Because they are usually stronger and the pages do not tear. This book is a board book but 6 of the pages fold out and that is where the problem lies. The fold out pages are regular flimsy paper and all have been ripped in the last couple months. The middle moon page has to be folded perfectly back into the book or it will rip. I would recommend the paperback or hardcover as this board book is a big job just reading it to a toddler. A book should be relaxing time not wondering how to get the pages back in before turning the pages. You should be able to let your toddler hold the book but this one will not make it one reading if you let a toddler turn the pages. I love Eric Carles books but this one is too much work. Check it out!
From Publishers Weekly Carle, whose The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been extraordinarily successful, scores again with this stunning picture book, drawn in thick, brilliant brushstrokes of blues and greens and reds that dazzle the eye. Monica wants to play with the moon, but can’t reach it, so she asks her father to get it for her. Ingeniously designed with several fold-out pages, the books opens out horizontally to show a very long ladder Papa fetches, opens vertically to show him climbing the ladder above a very high mountain, and unfolds into a huge spread of the full moon, where the ladder has led Papa. But the moon is too big for him to carry, so he waits while it grows smaller, until finally it is the right size to bring home to Monica. She jumps and dances and frolics with it, but it keeps shrinking, until one day it’s gone. But not for long: a thin sliver soon appears in the sky, growing larger and becoming full once again. A splendid introduction to the monthly lunar cycle, this is also a wondrous work of art that will stand up to countless readings. Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me (The World of Eric Carle) Board book – October 1, 1999 by Eric Carle (Author, Illustrator) Review
Great little book. Cute story, but TINY. I misread the size and was disappointed in how small it is, however, the 4 stars is due to the folding out pages. As fun as it is for older children, or young ones that have learned to respect books, it can be tricky for them to fold them in by themselves without bending them in the wrong areas. If you plan to use this book as a "tool" to teach children how to be extra careful with books, this is a good one!Its still a good one otherwise, but just make sure you keep an eye out while your child has it. -Read Reviews-
Okay, my son REALLY likes this book, so one star is straight from him to you. The other three stars are from me. The pictures are lovely as Eric Carle’s work always is. Clearly my son sees magic in them. The story is okay. ..there is not really a resolution at the end and I kind of made up one because that bothers me. On the other hand, it is touching that Monica’s dad goes to such trouble to get her heart’s desire. My real beef with this is that the board book version is put together so poorly. The fold out pages are just like wrapping paper glued on the board pages. Literally–you can see the lumps of glue, and the pages aren’t exactly straight. Really, publisher? You couldn’t make them like card-stock, the way lift-the-flap books usually are? I almost sent it back, but my son liked it so well I decided to keep it. I recommend checking out other editions of this book before buying.
