Outside Over There (Caldecott Collection) Hardcover – April 22, 1981 by Maurice Sendak (Author)

Maurice Sendak at his best, well, after Where the Wild Things Are. Great story of brave Ida and her clever dealings with the goblins. Sendak shows us that scary bullies are really babies themselves. I love the female protagonist and the strength and wisdom she gains from her sailor father. Illustrations are detailed and evocative of earlier times. It is a Caldecott Honor book. Nice to have it in paperback so we all can afford to have our own copies. Check it out!

Review “Ida tumbles into a magical world to recover her lost sister and, in the process, makes discoveries about herself and those she loves. Hauntingly illustrated by a master storyteller and artist.”–“Children’s Books 1981 (NY Public Library).” “A book for all ages. . . . Sendak has never produced anything like [this].”–“H.”

Outside Over There (Caldecott Collection) Hardcover – April 22, 1981 by Maurice Sendak (Author) Review

If you’re looking for more magical Maurice Sendak besides Where the Wild Things Are, this is a wonderful little book. The pictures are plentiful and dreamlike. The language of the writing is also kind of dreamlike and strange. It’s a good book for a little girl because the heroine, Ida, is a girl. She takes care of her little baby sibling and rescues her after the goblins snatch her away and leave a changeling in her place. I treasure this book as one of my favorites that I used to read to my daughter when she was little, and it’s one of my favorite children’s books to give as a gift. -Read Reviews-

A peculiar story.
