Love these books!!! They are Awesome. As a senior in college about to graduate with my degree in elementary education, I was excited to find that Amazon still sold this book series. These are books that were brought up many times, in regards to children’s literature, in my courses. I was disappointed to see the negative reviews commenting on how Small they are. That is the point!!! These books are made to be small on purpose! Little children have little hands, they are meant for children to hold and read on their own to enjoy. I bought these for my Niece for Christmas and cannot wait for her to read them and enjoy them. The stories are great, one teaches a lesson while the others teach reading basics like letters and numbers. Also, for those book buffs out there, it is written by Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) and the illustrations are beautiful. Check it out!
Review “What more could anyone ask? These books are truly for all ages.” — “SLJ.”
Nutshell Library: Alligators all around / Chicken Soup With Rice / One was Johnny / Pierre Hardcover – Box set, October 10, 1962 by Maurice Sendak (Author, Illustrator) Review
I bought this set of books for my oldest child 16 years ago, when he was 5. He loved them. We enjoyed reading them. The books wore out or got lost over the years. He could still quote some of them verbatim. I bought this same set for my 3 year old this Christmas. When my 21 year old picked up the wrapped gift, he immediately knew what it was. I think he was the first to read it to the 3 year old. It brought back great memories and will be enjoyed by my youngest as much as my oldest! (And everyone in between!)I love books that I do not get weary of when a child wants to read it every day. These books do not drive me crazy. The prose, poetry and artwork are all fun. -Read Reviews-
I give this small collection of wonderful rhymes by Sendak to all new babies for whom I buy gifts. Introduced to this treasure through a gift to my youngest by her godparents, my whole family enjoyed them. They are just the right size for little hands. They fit inside little pockets for quick access. These wonderful, fun, nonsensical, and brilliant verses are a joy to read out loud to the little people. My older children loved to read them to my younger children. I loved to read them to anyone who would let me. I recently went to buy these for a friend’s new baby and found to my dismay that they are now being reissued in one, larger format book. While this does not take away from the verses themselves, it does take away the sheer joy of having them in a pocket or of the child being able to handle them so easily. The tactile experience for the little ones is missing. They are more difficult to find in the small Nutshell Library format. More’s the pity! But they can be found.
