Joan Crawford in her academy Award-winning performance. A best-selling novel. A standout performance by Jack Carson as a "seedy" character who will do almost anything for a buck, Eve Arden in a nominated best-supporting-actress performance and the impressive film-debut of Ann Blyth. Also, Zachery Scott was never more smooth or a scoundrel than he is here. Worth the viewing. Devoted mother will do anything to satisfy the "wants" of her selfish, grasping daughter. Murder, duplicity and infidelity are just some of elements within the film. The frame-up of Jack Carson for murder is the "icing on the cake. " Great on all levels. Well-worth seeing! Crawford deserved the Oscar; Motherhood was never more sincere than it is here. Check it out!

I gave this movie the full five stars because, as far as hard working mothers versus ungrateful children goes, this movie has it all. You’ve got the drama of the loss of a child which shifts all the parenting focus onto the one remaining child. You can tell early on that the daughter is ashamed of her mother. Unfortunately, the shame and ungratefulness grow exponentially with the hard work and tough choices the mother has had to make. There are some things a mother wants and believes she will receive if she is a good mother: to be loved, respected, admired, and appreciated by their daughter. But no matter how hard the mother tries, no matter how hard she works, and whatever personal sacrifices she makes; her child may not recognize the fine mother she has been given. This is an old movie with life messages that are ageless. Tips: have a box of tissues handy and brace yourself
