These cutters are excellent at the $5 price point. I purchased one to add to my at-home vaping tool kit, and a second pair for my electronics repair tool kit. After about a month of use, these are points to consider when purchasing this product. To help in deciding to purchase I have added photos for you to see the product up close. Pros:At $5 dollars, you can’t beat the price. The handles are non-slip rubber/plastic without being to sticky, doesn’t attract dust or dirt. The handles protect your palm when cutting, softening the feel when applying cutting pressure. The blades are hard metal, and after a month show no nicking or bending. (see picture)The blades are at enough of an angle to get close when cutting without blocking your view. Warnings on handles reminds you to ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION and CUT WIRE MAX THICKNESS 1. 3 mmSpring back handles feel firm and just right for repeated cuts. Cons:Only for use on small, soft wires. ** Not designed for heavy duty or home electrical wiring. I have seen some review stating the blades are uneven when handles are squeezed together (seems rare)[. ..] Check it out!
The Hakko CHP 170 micro soft-wire cutter has an 8mm long jaw set at a 21-degree angle for flush-cutting terminal wires up to 16 gauge (1.3mm). The tool is constructed of 2.5mm heat-treated carbon steel that provides durability and long life. Precision-ground holes and surfaces provide smooth movement. Nonslip hand grips provide comfort and control, and a dolphin-style curved fore-edge protects hands from cutting surfaces. An internal spring returns the tool to the open position, reducing operator fatigue. Parkerized surfaces prevent glare and increase corrosion resistance.

These cutters are absolutely fantastic for the price. Yes, Hakko likely licensed their name because of the cachet their soldering products have in the market and don’t actually manufacture these. Yes, Wiha and Knipex tools are better on average but they haven’t sold anything for less than $5 in their companies’ entire existence. Wiha are professional tools for all day, every day use and are designed and priced accordingly. Even for heavy hobby or light professional use, these Hakkos are definitely more than good enough. They cut beautifully and effortlessly, feel great in the hand and the non-slip, rubbery handle covers are soft on your hands and perfect all around in my view. I buy high quality tools and test gear all the time because using cheapo kit just feels unpleasant even if it does the job. These don’t feel that way at all. In fact, in a blind test I wouldn’t put them anywhere near this price point. This is one of the few cases in the electronics hobby where you can go cheap and get quality, so save your money and put it towards somewhere it’ll make a difference like a scope or a quality power supply. -Read Reviews-
I purchased the cutters for use when making plastic model kits. I needed something, other than a sharp razor knife, to remove parts from the sprue trees with minimal damage. I also didn’t want to spend a lot on them (as you can see, with a quick search, others can be quite expensive). I had not seen these before and took a chance on them when they "popped-up" as a recommended item for me. I’m glad I did. I’ve now used them while build a model and found they work very well. This was a European model kit which has soft plastic, these cutters easily handled them and cut through the plastic without crushing. The parts came away from the sprues cleanly and without effort. The handles are spring-loaded and the cutting blades, on my example, are perfectly aligned. I would readily recommend them to other modelers as a cost-effective tool for model building.
